The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) says American and Nigerian forces have completed a series of joint training exercises at an undisclosed operating location in Bauchi State, covering unmanned aircraft systems, combat casualty care, and other military skills.
AFRICOM disclosed this in a report released on Monday, describing the exercises as part of a broader security cooperation mission between the two countries aimed at boosting military capability, readiness, and long-term partner capacity.
According to the Command, the training curriculum included Combat Lifesaver and Tactical Combat Casualty Care instruction, weapons familiarisation, camouflage, water treatment and testing, explosive ordnance disposal, small-unit tactics, and unmanned aircraft system operations.
“US and Nigerian forces are conducting a series of training events at Operating Location Bauchi, Nigeria, aimed at sharing military expertise, strengthening partner capacity and building relationships between service members from both nations,” AFRICOM stated.
A logistics officer with the US Army Southern European Task Force, Africa, and operations officer at OL Bauchi, Capt Gabriel Feingold, said Nigerian commanders were given a range of training options and allowed to select areas of priority for their troops.
Drone training reportedly drew the strongest interest from the Nigerian side. Sgt Mark Murphy, an intelligence analyst with the 13th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, led about 10 personnel from the Nigerian Air Force Special Forces Regiment through the course, which opened with roughly 45 minutes of classroom instruction before moving into hands-on flight operation.
AFRICOM said the exercises extended beyond technical instruction, creating room for American and Nigerian troops to build working relationships and improve coordination between the two forces.
Feingold noted that this kind of engagement carries particular weight for junior personnel on both sides, saying it strengthens ties between soldiers and partner forces at the lower ranks.
