Veteran Nollywood actor Sunday Afolabi has opened up about the difficult financial challenges he has faced since relocating to Badagry, revealing that the move affected his acting career and forced him to take up other means of livelihood.
Afolabi made the emotional disclosure during an interview with actress and media personality Biola Adebayo on the Talk to B podcast, where he recounted how he went from being a familiar face on television to struggling to meet his basic needs.
According to the actor, he moved to Badagry with the hope of owning a house. However, he said the decision came with unexpected setbacks, particularly as acting and photography jobs became increasingly difficult to secure.
He recalled that his Nissan Quest eventually became unusable because he could not afford the necessary repairs. The vehicle reportedly remained parked for almost two years before he decided to sell it.
Afolabi said he eventually sold the car for just ₦180,000 and used the money to purchase a fairly used motorcycle, popularly known as an okada, in an attempt to survive.
“I actually sold my Nissan Quest to buy a fairly used motorcycle,” he said.
The veteran actor, however, revealed that riding the motorcycle became another challenge because he had little experience with it. He said he suffered multiple accidents after repeatedly falling while trying to use the motorcycle.
Afolabi became emotional while narrating the difficult experience and reflecting on the hardship his wife and children endured alongside him.
He also recalled an encounter with a man who recognised him as a television actor but was surprised to see him struggling financially.
According to Afolabi, the man advised him to return to the city and reconnect with people who could help him get back on his feet.
The actor said he has always preferred working to begging, stressing that he is prepared to take up any legitimate job that would enable him to support himself and his family.
“What I hate most in my life is to beg for food. I would rather do any legitimate job,” he said.
Afolabi added that he would be willing to work as an Uber driver if he had access to a suitable car, indicating his readiness to explore other opportunities despite his challenges.
Following his revelation, Biola Adebayo appealed to members of the public to support the veteran actor. She expressed hope that the Talk to B platform could help him secure a car, improve his living conditions and establish a sustainable means of livelihood.
The actor’s account has once again highlighted the financial difficulties some veteran entertainers face after years of contributing to Nigeria’s film and television industry.
