When Dame Adaora Umeoji OON was announced as the Group Managing Director of Zenith Bank a few years ago, taking over from Ebenezer Onyeagwu, many who were unfamiliar with her background doubted her capacity. However, those who had worked closely with her knew that her appointment would mark a turning point in the bank’s fortunes. A proven goal-getter with a wealth of experience, she was destined to make her mark.
Today, under her leadership, Zenith Bank has witnessed a remarkable surge in performance and profitability. The bank has maintained an impressive winning streak, effectively silencing her naysayers, many of whom have now become quiet admirers of her reforms and her strategic strides in positioning Zenith Bank at an enviable height on the global stage.
Investors and shareholders are delighted with her stewardship and have given her a resounding vote of confidence, reaffirming their belief in her ability and capacity. This trust is well-founded, as Zenith Bank was recently named “Africa’s Best Bank” and “Nigeria’s Best Bank”, the latter for the second consecutive year at the prestigious Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2026. The awards were presented to the bank on Thursday, 16 July 2026, at The Peninsula London Hotel in London. This dual recognition is a testament to the bank’s sustained excellence in financial performance, customer service, digital innovation and its significant contribution to economic development across Nigeria and the wider African continent.
Under Umeoji’s leadership, the bank posted impressive results in the 2025 financial year, growing gross earnings by six percent year-on-year to ₦4.19 trillion and delivering a profit after tax of ₦1.04 trillion, while reducing its non-performing loan ratio from 4.7 percent to 3.8 percent. In keeping with its dividend policy, Zenith Bank rewarded its investors with a record-breaking total dividend of ₦10.00 per share amounting to ₦410.69 billion for the 2025 financial year. This represents a 100 percent increase over the ₦5.00 per share paid in 2024.
As Adaora continues to perform excellently, many have urged her to remain steadfast and keep working tirelessly to sustain the momentum. With her remarkable achievements, she is already being hailed as one of the best GMD’s the bank has seen in recent years, shattering stereotypes woven around women in leadership. She is thriving in a man’s world, delivering outstanding results and proving that excellence knows no gender.
