National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has argued that Nigeria should prioritize competence and leadership capacity over regional considerations when selecting presidential candidates.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Thursday, Baba-Ahmed maintained that the practice of zoning political offices, particularly the presidency, has done more harm than good to the country.
According to him, the focus should be on electing capable leaders regardless of their ethnic, religious, or regional backgrounds.
He stated that the PRP would not restrict its choice of presidential candidate based on geographical location, religion, or ethnicity, stressing that the party’s primary concern is finding a qualified individual who can effectively lead the nation.
Baba-Ahmed said, “Fielding a candidate from a particular zone is not important. I believe it does not matter where the candidate comes from.
“Insisting that the president must emerge from a specific part of the country has damaged Nigeria more than many people realize.
“We experienced eight years under an administration led by former President Muhammadu Buhari, who came from the North, yet many Nigerians were dissatisfied with the quality of governance.”
The PRP chairman insisted that Nigeria’s political future should be determined by merit rather than regional power-sharing arrangements.
In a separate interview on Channels Television, Baba-Ahmed also declared his intention to work towards removing President Bola Tinubu from office in the 2027 general elections.
He described Tinubu’s administration as detrimental to Nigeria’s future and said the PRP’s major objective ahead of the next election cycle is to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“I will work to get Tinubu out of power because I believe he is bad news for Nigeria’s future,” Baba-Ahmed said.
He added that the opposition party is focused on providing Nigerians with an alternative political platform capable of challenging the APC and offering a different direction for the country ahead of the 2027 polls.
