Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has announced that the Bama Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp, the largest in the state outside Maiduguri, will be shut down within the next month.
The governor disclosed this on Thursday during an assessment visit to the Government Science Secondary School, Bama, where the camp is located.
He said the closure is part of his administration’s plan to end prolonged displacement in Bama Local Government Area and resettle affected families in their ancestral communities.
During the visit, Zulum personally supervised a screening exercise that lasted over three hours, aimed at confirming only genuine households remain in the camp ahead of the final resettlement phase.
“We are here to examine the remaining displaced people that are living in the IDP camp with a view to ensuring the closure of Bama IDP camp,” Zulum said.
He noted that screening of male heads of households from affected communities had already been completed, with only three communities — Mayanti, Goniri, and Bula Kuriye — left to be resettled.
“By the next one month, the Bama IDP camp, which is the largest camp in the state outside the state capital, will be closed,” he added.
Bama LGA was among the areas hardest hit by the Boko Haram insurgency, which displaced thousands and disrupted communities for years.
Over the past seven years, the Borno State Government has resettled several communities in the area, including Darajamal, Nguro Soye, Goniri, Banki, and Abbaram.
Zulum reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to rebuilding insurgency-affected communities, describing the planned camp closure as another major milestone in the state’s resettlement and recovery efforts.
