President Bola Tinubu has named Major General Adeyinka A. Fadewa (retd.) as his Special Adviser on Homeland Security, signaling a renewed push to tighten the country’s internal security architecture.
The appointment was announced Monday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, through a statement from the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Ibrahim Abubakar Kana. The presidency said the move underscores its determination to sharpen intelligence-led operations, improve inter-agency coordination, and mount a stronger response to growing security threats across Nigeria.
Fadewa brings more than three decades of military and intelligence experience to the role. His career spans national security strategy, counter-terrorism operations, intelligence fusion, and international security diplomacy — a profile the presidency described as combining rare operational depth with strategic foresight and institutional leadership.
A significant chapter of his career unfolded at the Office of the National Security Adviser, where he served as Principal General Staff Officer to the NSA between 2015 and 2021. During that period, he was a driving force behind the creation of the Intelligence Fusion Centre — a multi-agency platform that brought together the Defence Intelligence Agency, National Intelligence Agency, Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force, and the Armed Forces to strengthen national threat assessment and streamline strategic response.
After hanging up his uniform, Fadewa transitioned into research, taking up a position as Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja. There, he continued shaping policy conversations around policing reform and civil-security cooperation. He also authored a monograph, Policing and National Security in Nigeria, which laid out practical frameworks for improving collaboration between civilian institutions and security agencies.
Tinubu said he expects the appointment to accelerate progress toward a safer Nigeria through better coordination of homeland security efforts, stronger intelligence integration, and more proactive risk management. He urged Fadewa to bring his full experience and strategic judgment to bear in the new position, in service of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
