Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Kano governor and leader of the influential Kwankwasiyya movement, has publicly expressed willingness to serve as running mate to Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Monday, Kwankwaso said he would welcome the opportunity to partner with the former Anambra governor under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the party both men recently joined after their time in the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The veteran politician revealed that he and Obi have already reached an informal understanding to jointly tackle Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation should they contest together.
“Both of us my humble self and Peter Obi have agreed to tackle the issue of insecurity head-on to ensure there is peace and stability in this country,” Kwankwaso stated.
Pressed on whether he would accept a vice-presidential slot should Obi secure the NDC’s presidential ticket, Kwankwaso did not hesitate.
“If the party decides that I should be the running mate of any candidate from the south under the circumstances, I’d be happy to work together with him,” he said, adding that he could think of no stronger political pairing for Nigeria’s future.
“Personally, I cannot remember any better combination, no matter how much time is given to find those who can beat us in terms of doing the right thing for this country.”
The declaration signals a potentially formidable north-south alliance as Nigeria’s major opposition figures begin positioning themselves well ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
