President Bola Tinubu has applauded the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for dismantling a Nigerian-Mexican drug trafficking syndicate and disrupting a multi-million-dollar narcotics network.
The President described the operation as a major achievement in Nigeria’s fight against organised crime, drug trafficking and cross-border criminal activities.
Tinubu’s reaction was contained in a statement released on Thursday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier General Buba Marwa (retd.), had earlier announced the breakthrough after weeks of intelligence gathering and coordinated operations involving international security partners.
According to the agency, the operation led to the arrest of foreign nationals, local drug barons and several accomplices, while illicit drugs and chemicals worth over $360 million were recovered.
Tinubu praised the operatives for their professionalism, bravery and dedication during the mission, urging them not to relent in the fight against drug trafficking.
“I commend the courage, resilience and commitment displayed by NDLEA operatives during this operation. They must, however, remain vigilant and continue the battle against drug trafficking,” the President stated.
He said the successful raid sends a strong warning to criminal organisations that Nigeria will not tolerate the activities of drug cartels within its territory.
The President also expressed concern over the increasing use of West Africa as a transit route for cocaine, synthetic drugs and unregulated pharmaceutical products heading to Europe and North America.
According to Tinubu, the growing drug trade poses serious threats to regional security, fuels corruption and contributes to organised violence across borders.
He further warned that illicit drugs are endangering the future of many young people, with several youths becoming victims of addiction and criminal exploitation.
Tinubu stressed that combating narcotics should not be left to the NDLEA alone, calling on Nigerians to support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities in their communities.
He noted that timely information from citizens could help authorities uncover illegal trafficking networks and criminal operations nationwide.
The President assured Nigerians that his administration would continue to support the NDLEA and other security agencies in strengthening efforts to tackle drug trafficking, protect lives and improve national security.
