A sweeping electricity outage plunged some of Abuja’s most critical landmarks into darkness on Saturday, with the Presidential Villa, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, and the Supreme Court among the high-profile locations left without power.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the disruption, attributing it to a technical fault on the transmission network. In a public notice, the company said engineers from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had been deployed to address the fault and restore supply as quickly as possible.
“We regret the inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding,” AEDC stated.
The blackout cut across a wide swath of the capital, hitting key government, diplomatic, and commercial zones. Affected areas include the State House, the National Assembly Annex, the National Judicial Council, the Defence Intelligence Agency, and the National Planning Commission. Several foreign missions — including the embassies of Turkey, Sudan, Egypt, Pakistan, and India, as well as the European Union delegation — were also impacted.
Major hospitality and commercial establishments such as Bolingo Hotel, Envoy Hotel, Karibu Hotel, and the Shoprite complex on Airport Road lost power, as did the National Hospital and a string of government-owned lodges representing Kano, Sokoto, and Imo states.
The outage extended further to residential and institutional areas including Asokoro, Garki Areas 2, 3, 7 and 8, Garki Village and Market, Lugbe, Maitama, and parts of the Aso Drive corridor. Aviation Village, the Airforce Base, River Park Estate, Nicomsat, and a Korean school were also listed among the affected locations, along with offices of Immigration, Customs, Correctional Services, and Civil Defence.
No timeline for full restoration had been announced as of the time of this report.
