A civil society group has commended the Nigerian Army and Nigeria Police Force for recent rescue operations that freed hundreds of abducted citizens, while calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to recover schoolchildren and teachers still in captivity.
The Prayer and Support for the Nigerian Armed Forces and Other Security Agencies group, through its convener, Ambassador Mary Abayomi Fatile, issued the appeal in a statement on Monday.
Fatile congratulated the Army on rescuing 360 persons held by Boko Haram insurgents in the Mandara Mountains of Borno State, and separately praised the Police for securing the release of the sister of former Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu and her two sons. She described both operations as achievements worthy of national appreciation.
“The successes recorded by the security agencies reflect the courage, professionalism, and dedication of personnel who continue to work under challenging and dangerous conditions,” she said.
Despite the commendations, Fatile urged security forces not to relent, particularly regarding captive schoolchildren and teachers. “Every day they remain in abductors’ hands is a wound on the conscience of this nation,” she said.
She also called on Nigerians to support security personnel and report suspicious activity, promoting the principle: “If you see something, say something.”
Fatile warned political leaders against exploiting the insecurity crisis for electoral advantage. “The suffering of the Nigerian people must never be weaponised for political gain. The tears of kidnapped children and grieving families will echo louder than any campaign promise. Lead with compassion and urgency, or the weight of inaction will be your legacy,” she said.
She expressed confidence that closer cooperation among government, security agencies and citizens would help build a safer Nigeria.
