Commuters along the Iyana-Ipaja/Iyana-Iba axis of Lagos were left stranded on Monday after commercial bus drivers operating the route withdrew their services in protest against alleged extortion by law enforcement and transport regulatory agencies.
Findings showed that the drivers were protesting what they described as incessant extortion by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Police, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), commonly known as agbero.
Speaking on the development, some of the drivers decried what they called a steady rise in extortion, describing the situation as no longer bearable.
They alleged that LASTMA officials routinely impound their vehicles and hold them for an entire day, cutting off both owners and drivers from their daily earnings.
The drivers said the situation had made profitable operation increasingly difficult, pushing them to embark on the strike as a way of drawing attention to their grievances.
