The Kano State Government has approved ₦1.5 billion for the conduct of a mass wedding programme aimed at supporting 3,000 beneficiaries across the state.
The Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa, disclosed this while briefing journalists on preparations for the exercise.
According to Daurawa, the approved funds will cover several aspects of the programme, including furniture, food supplies, dowries, clothing materials for couples, and a ₦100,000 start-up grant for each bride.
He stated that the government is committed to ensuring the successful implementation of the initiative, which is expected to benefit thousands of families.
“The Kano State Government will spend ₦1.5 billion on the entire mass wedding programme scheduled to take place soon,” Daurawa said.
He further revealed that the Hisbah Board, working alongside the State Ministry of Health, has commenced compulsory medical screening for intending couples.
The screening exercise includes tests for HIV, hepatitis, pregnancy, genotype compatibility, and other sexually transmitted infections to determine the health status of participants before the marriages are conducted.
Daurawa noted that more than 5,000 people applied for the programme, but only 3,000 successful candidates will be selected after the screening process is completed.
He also commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for supporting the initiative, adding that the governor will announce the official date for the mass wedding ceremony.
The medical screening exercise began on Monday and is currently being conducted for prospective couples drawn from 24 of the state’s 44 local government areas.
