The Urban Community Transformation and Empowerment Network (UCTEN) has reaffirmed its commitment to social rehabilitation and human development by joining officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service at the grand finale of a football championship organized for inmates at the Ibara Medium Security Custodial Centre, Abeokuta.
The organization attended the event on Thursday following an invitation from the Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, which sought the support of stakeholders and community-based organizations in encouraging inmates and promoting rehabilitation through sporting activities.
The championship final, which drew an enthusiastic crowd of correctional officers, invited guests, and stakeholders, featured a thrilling encounter between the Inmates Football Team and Correctional FC. The inmates displayed remarkable teamwork and determination, defeating their opponents 5–2 to emerge champions.
Among dignitaries present were the Controller of Corrections, Ogun State Command, CC Abioye Kamoru Adesina, the Officer-in-Charge of the Ibara Medium Security Custodial Centre, the Command Public Relations Officer, CSC Odukoya Owolola O., and other senior officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
Speaking after the match, UCTEN President, Dr. Hafiz Bello, said the visit was in line with the organization’s belief that every individual deserves an opportunity for positive change and reintegration into society.
According to him, correctional centres are designed not only to keep offenders in custody but also to provide an environment for personal reform, education, and character development.
He noted that sports remain a powerful instrument for building discipline, confidence, teamwork, and emotional well-being, stressing that activities of this nature contribute significantly to the rehabilitation process.
“Rehabilitation is a collective responsibility. As a society, we must continue to encourage and support individuals who are making efforts to rebuild their lives. Through our presence here today, we want the inmates to know that they have not been forgotten and that there is hope beyond their present circumstances,” he stated.
Dr. Bello also commended the Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service for its dedication to programmes aimed at improving inmate welfare and preparing inmates for successful reintegration into society.
During an interactive session with inmates, UCTEN Financial Secretary, Mr. Adeyinka Adesina, urged them to maintain good conduct and remain focused on the various educational, vocational, and rehabilitation opportunities available within the custodial centre. He encouraged them to embrace positive values and prepare themselves for productive lives after release.
Over the years, UCTEN has maintained a cordial relationship with the Ibara Custodial Centre through its participation in various empowerment and rehabilitation initiatives. One notable intervention was the organization’s involvement in the matriculation ceremony of 58 inmates admitted into the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) programme within the facility, including two postgraduate students.
The initiative has continued to expand access to higher education for inmates while enhancing their prospects for meaningful reintegration upon completion of their custodial terms.
As part of its support for positive engagement among inmates, UCTEN presented cash rewards to outstanding participants at the conclusion of the football championship. Awards were presented to the Best Male Team, Best Female Team, Best Male Player, Best Female Player, and Best Female Defender of the tournament.
The organization further pledged its continued support for programmes that promote education, sports development, vocational training, skills acquisition, rehabilitation, and inmate welfare.
The UCTEN delegation was led by its President, Dr. Hafiz Bello, and comprised the Financial Secretary, Mr. Adeyinka Adesina; Welfare Officer, Mr. Adewole Olaogun; Mr. Sofela Abayomi Oluwaseun; Mr. Adebanjo Kehinde; Mr. Sodree Ajasa Ogunsolu; and Mr. Kunle Bamgbose.
The successful tournament once again demonstrated the growing role of sports as a tool for rehabilitation and social inclusion within correctional facilities. It also highlighted the importance of collaboration between government institutions and civil society organizations in creating opportunities for inmates to reform, develop their talents, and prepare for life after incarceration.
