The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said President Bola Tinubu has made efforts to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges but believes the country now needs a leader with greater capacity to address the worsening situation.
Obi made the remarks during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, published on YouTube on Thursday, while outlining why Nigerians should support his presidential bid ahead of the 2027 general election.
Reacting to comments by the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adeboye, that President Tinubu had done his best in tackling insecurity, Obi said the respected cleric’s assessment was fair.
According to Obi, the key issue is not whether the President is making an effort, but whether those efforts have produced the results Nigerians need.
He said, “Pastor Adeboye remains a revered and respected religious leader whose sincerity and goodwill I have no reason to doubt. What he said was correct—that President Tinubu has tried his best. The real question is whether that best is enough for the challenges Nigeria faces today.”
The former Anambra State governor argued that Nigeria’s leadership crisis is rooted in a lack of competence, capacity, compassion, commitment and character.
He maintained that while President Tinubu may have given his best, the country requires leadership with the ability to effectively confront insecurity and other national challenges.
“President Tinubu is tired. He has tried his best, but I believe he should go home and rest,” Obi said.
He also urged Nigerians to evaluate his track record and policy proposals before deciding who should lead the country in the 2027 elections.
“I encourage Nigerians to look at my past record and compare it with what I am proposing for the future. That should guide their decision,” he added.
Pastor Adeboye had recently defended President Tinubu against criticism over the country’s worsening security situation, noting that the President had fulfilled his responsibility by directing the military and security agencies rather than personally leading operations.
The cleric, however, acknowledged the growing security concerns across the country and called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to combat terrorism, kidnapping and those sponsoring criminal activities.
