While many in her position often engage in fleeting endeavors that leave no permanent mark; like the proverbial rattlesnake slithering across a rocky path without effect; Barrister Chioma Uzodimma, the First Lady of Imo State, has vowed to leave an indelible footprint in everything she undertakes and she is doing so with remarkable vigor.
Since her husband assumed office as Governor of Imo State, she has been at the forefront of development. Despite being one of the youngest First Ladies in Nigeria, her impact has been resounding and transformative. She works in close partnership with her husband to ensure that women are properly positioned and given a voice, through numerous empowerment programs and pet projects that drive development for the girl child and women across the state.
Her annual August Meeting has become a vital platform for connecting with women from all Local Government Areas in Imo. At these gatherings, she distributes cash items, crop seedlings, farming inputs, and more, to ensure economic stability. The meeting also serves as a forum to hear firsthand the challenges and requests of these women, enabling her to provide timely succor.
Recently, under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum (NGSF) and the Ford Foundation Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Prevention Programme, she led a delegation to the Imo State Executive Chamber on 1st July 2026 for an advocacy and sensitization initiative. The engagement focused on preventing harmful social norms that perpetuate SGBV. She passionately advocated for the domestication of the Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Policy in Imo State, tackling one of the most significant structural drivers of vulnerability, the economic disempowerment of women and girls.
In her capacity as Chairperson of First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC), she convened women at Government House, Owerri, for the Cancer Survivors Gala 2026, an event to celebrate life, honor courage and reaffirm her commitment to a future where every Nigerian affected by cancer has the opportunity not only to survive but to thrive. Held to mark National Cancer Survivor Month, the Gala celebrated the extraordinary resilience of survivors, reminding us that hope is stronger than fear and that healing extends beyond treatment to emotional, social, financial and spiritual well-being. She remains steadfast in strengthening cancer awareness, prevention, HPV vaccination advocacy, early detection, patient support and survivorship care across Nigeria.
Those who have crossed paths with Chioma describe her as deeply tender-hearted, one who loathes seeing anyone in distress and is always ready to render assistance. This compassion fuels her relentless drive to ensure that women across Imo State are given a voice and cared for. She has publicly declared that she will not relent; as long as she remains First Lady of Imo, she will continue to push her husband’s administration to commit more to women and girl-child development, fostering greater stability and enduring peace in the state.
