The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has congratulated Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani on his emergence as the 17th Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State.
The Sultan described the peaceful and timely appointment of the new Emir as a positive development that reflects the enduring relevance and strength of Nigeria’s traditional institution.
Lawan Muhammad Sani was appointed to succeed his late father, His Royal Highness Alhaji (Dr.) Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, who died in Cairo, Egypt, on September 3, 2026, after spending 46 years on the throne.
In his congratulatory message issued on Sunday, the Sultan prayed for divine wisdom, strength and guidance for the new Emir as he takes on the responsibilities of leading the Gumel Emirate.
He urged the new monarch to protect the dignity, traditions and values of the historic emirate while building on the achievements and legacy of his predecessor.
The Sultan, who also serves as President of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, encouraged the new Emir to promote peace, justice, unity and development among his subjects.
He further urged him to maintain cordial relationships with neighbouring emirates, government authorities and communities within and outside the emirate.
According to the Sultan, the traditional institution remains an important pillar of peace, stability and social cohesion, particularly during periods when communities need responsible and purposeful leadership.
He also called on the people of Gumel Emirate to give the new Emir their full support and cooperation, noting that the effectiveness of traditional leadership depends largely on the unity and loyalty of the people.
The Sultan prayed for the repose of the soul of the late Emir, Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, and asked Allah to reward him for his decades of service to his people and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.
He also prayed for a long, peaceful and successful reign for the new Emir, Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani, as he begins his tenure in service to Gumel Emirate and humanity.
