Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has assured the people of Ijebuland that a new Awujale will be installed before May 29.
A statement issued in Abeokuta on Wednesday by his Media Adviser, Kayode Akinmade, said the governor made the pledge at a stakeholders’ meeting for Ogun East Senatorial District in Ijebu-Ode. Representatives of various interest groups attended.
Abiodun said his administration was committed to a peaceful, smooth and acceptable succession, and appealed to the people to remain calm and patient.
“I acknowledge the importance of the Awujale institution to the cultural heritage, identity and unity of Ijebuland. Our people should remain calm and patient as the necessary processes are being concluded.
“Our administration is giving the matter the attention it deserves, with a view to ensuring that the process is concluded peacefully and the emergence of a new Awujale enjoys the acceptance and support of the people,” he said.
The governor said the meeting was organised to deepen engagement with grassroots stakeholders, address community concerns and highlight his administration’s achievements in the past seven years.
On the economy, Abiodun named oil exploration around Eba Island and the proposed Gateway Deep-Sea Port in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area as major drivers of growth.
He added that the proposed Blue Marine Special Economic Zone would attract investment, create jobs and position the state as a hub for maritime trade, manufacturing and logistics.
Abiodun reaffirmed his commitment to infrastructure development and investment promotion, and thanked President Bola Tinubu for supporting key projects in the state. He urged residents to keep cooperating to advance peace and development.
The Awujale stool has been vacant since July 2025, when Oba Sikiru Adetona died at 91 after a 65-year reign
