A building collapsed in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, on Monday evening, triggering a swift emergency response as rescue teams combed the site for possible victims.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Emergency Management Department (FEMD) said it received a distress call around 7:20 p.m., prompting responders to mobilize immediately for search and rescue operations.
Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, confirmed the incident and disclosed that the building had already been sealed by the FCT Administration’s Department of Development Control before it came down. He said occupants had been ordered to vacate the property ahead of the collapse.
As of the time of this report, no casualties had been confirmed. Authorities said efforts were still underway to determine whether anyone remained trapped beneath the rubble, with an excavator expected to join the operation.
FCT Police Command spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh said a police response team, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) Edward Akaniyene and Area Commander (Metro) Georgelyn Ufomadu, arrived on the scene shortly after the collapse.
She said the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Federal Fire Service, FCTA Security Service Department and other agencies were also part of the multi-agency response.
Adeh reiterated that preliminary findings confirmed the building had been marked and sealed by Development Control prior to the collapse. “So far, no victims have been confirmed. However, search and rescue operations are still ongoing to identify and rescue any persons who may be trapped in the rubble,” she said.
She added that police had opened an investigation to establish the circumstances and cause of the collapse, and appealed to residents to steer clear of the area and cooperate with responders to allow rescue work to proceed unhindered.
Adeh said further updates on casualties and the extent of the damage would be issued as more information becomes available.
