Former Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has issued a blunt warning to President Bola Tinubu: abandon any ambition for a second term and stop pretending to have answers to Nigeria’s deepening crisis.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Oritsejafor delivered one of his sharpest public attacks on the Tinubu administration, accusing it of inflicting more damage on the country than any previous government.
“Don’t begin to dream of coming back to continue this same mess,” the cleric said flatfully.
He argued that the administration’s flagship “Renewed Hope” agenda had delivered the opposite of its promise, leaving ordinary Nigerians trapped in hardship and insecurity with no faith in their government.
“The government of Tinubu has done more harm to this nation than this nation has ever experienced,” Oritsejafor declared. “The average Nigerian today has no hope, except if you say you look up to God.”
While stopping short of calling for the President’s resignation, the clergyman urged Tinubu to conduct an honest self-assessment.
“I would not sit here categorically and tell him resign. But what I would say to him is — don’t pretend to know what to do when you don’t know what to do. Don’t pretend that you can take Nigeria out of where it is now, when you know you can’t,” he said.
Oritsejafor also took aim at those who relentlessly attacked former President Goodluck Jonathan, suggesting that many of his fiercest critics are now the ones running the country.
“People who called him clueless — where are they now? Are they not the same people in power today?” he asked. “They protested against him all over the place, especially in Lagos. Now they have the clue, but look at where Nigeria is.”
He maintained that several individuals who bankrolled the anti-Jonathan protests have since found their way into the corridors of power — and the results, he argued, speak for themselves.
Asked whether he regretted backing Jonathan in the 2015 presidential election, Oritsejafor was unequivocal: “No, I don’t.”
