The Federal Government has launched a nationwide Artificial Intelligence (AI) capacity-building programme aimed at training approximately 11,700 teachers across Federal Unity Colleges as part of efforts to modernise Nigeria’s education sector and improve classroom teaching.
The initiative officially commenced on Thursday with the signing of the Terms of Reference (ToR) between the Federal Ministry of Education and ICEDT Consult Limited, clearing the way for the nationwide implementation of the AI Teacher Capacity Development Programme.
The programme, which will be coordinated through the Ministry’s Education Support Services Department, is designed to equip teachers with advanced digital skills while preparing students for the demands of an increasingly technology-driven global economy. The initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises innovation and education reform.
Speaking during the signing ceremony in Abuja, the Director of the Education Support Services Department, Gabriel Amudipe, described the project as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s education system and teaching workforce.
He explained that the nationwide rollout followed the success of a pilot programme conducted in selected Federal Unity Colleges and praised ICEDT Consult Limited for developing a comprehensive implementation strategy that will ensure effective coordination across the country’s six geopolitical zones.
Amudipe stressed that the quality and standards achieved during the pilot phase must be maintained throughout the nationwide implementation.
He also urged ministry officials responsible for supervising the programme to carry out their duties professionally and ensure full compliance with the agreed implementation framework.
According to him, the Federal Ministry of Education remains committed to supporting innovative initiatives that enhance teacher professionalism, improve learning outcomes and encourage the responsible use of emerging technologies in schools.
Also speaking at the event, Deputy Director of the Education Support Services Department, Oladele Fapohunda, described the programme as a major step towards strengthening digital innovation in Federal Unity Colleges.
He noted that the success of the initiative would depend on effective collaboration among government agencies, education stakeholders and implementation partners.
Providing further details, the Head of Strategic Partnerships and Learning Scientist at ICEDT Consult Limited, Dr. Abdulrahman Orosanya, said the project received approval for nationwide expansion after a successful pilot carried out in six Federal Unity Colleges, representing each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
According to Orosanya, the pilot demonstrated that Artificial Intelligence could significantly improve lesson preparation, classroom instruction, assessment methods and teachers’ overall productivity.
He added that the nationwide rollout is expected to strengthen teachers’ digital competencies, improve instructional delivery and support the Federal Government’s vision of building a technology-driven education system capable of producing globally competitive students equipped with 21st-century skills.
The ceremony concluded with the formal signing of the Terms of Reference by officials of the Federal Ministry of Education and ICEDT Consult Limited, marking the beginning of preparations for full implementation across all Federal Unity Colleges.
Beyond directly training about 11,700 teachers, the programme is expected to positively impact thousands of students through improved teaching practices, greater digital innovation and the responsible integration of Artificial Intelligence into classroom learning.
The Federal Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to modernise Nigeria’s education system, improve teacher quality and promote inclusive, equitable and future-ready education across the country.
