Armed hoodlums attacked officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State on Sunday and made away with three packs of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the attack in a statement issued in Osogbo by its spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi.
The attack is the latest in a string of violent incidents recorded ahead of the August 15 governorship election in the state.
Ojelabi said about ten suspected hoodlums stormed Oyinlola DC Primary School in Ward 2, where INEC officials were distributing PVCs to registered voters. The attackers fired shots into the air to scare off the officials before fleeing with the voter cards.
Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan has condemned the attack and ordered a full investigation to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible.
“Tactical and intelligence assets have been deployed, and efforts have been intensified to apprehend the perpetrators and recover the stolen PVCs,” Ojelabi said.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to professionalism and the rule of law, and urged residents to remain calm and avoid any action that could worsen the security situation.
Ojelabi appealed to anyone with useful information to contact the nearest police station or the command’s emergency lines. He warned that anyone attempting to exploit the incident to cause further unrest would face the full weight of the law.
In a related development, police operatives restored order in Ile-Ife after suspected thugs gathered at the Mayfair Garage area and became disruptive, temporarily breaching public peace.
The command assured residents of its continued commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
