Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed claims that he was offered ₦500 billion to contest against Peter Obi in order to split votes in Nigeria’s South-South region, describing the allegation as completely false and politically motivated.
Reacting through his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan said the report was fabricated and intended to drag the former president into unnecessary political controversy ahead of future elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, Eze urged Nigerians to ignore the publication, noting that it originated from an obscure website and falsely attributed the claim to Jonathan.
According to him, the report lacked the basic elements of credible journalism, as it failed to indicate where or when Jonathan allegedly made the statement, identify those involved, or provide any evidence to support the allegation.
“The report failed to state where or when Jonathan allegedly made such a claim, who was present or who purportedly made the alleged offer,” Eze stated.
He described the publication as fake news deliberately designed to mislead the public, fuel political tension, and falsely associate the former president with claims he never made.
Eze further warned that as political activities intensify ahead of upcoming elections, the circulation of misinformation and fabricated statements has become more frequent.
He advised Nigerians to verify sensational political reports before sharing them, stressing that the allegation should be disregarded in its entirety because it has no factual basis.
