The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed two factories in Ogun State for producing banned sachet and 100ml alcoholic drinks.
The affected companies are Nigerian Distillers Limited on Idiroko Road, Iju-Ota, and Intercontinental Distillers Limited on Idiroko Road, Ota.
NAFDAC’s Assistant Director for Water and Drinks, Olakunle Ojo, said both firms were caught producing alcohol in sachets and small bottles, in breach of the Federal Government’s ban on such packaging.
Ojo said the government banned sachet alcohol and drinks in 30ml and 100ml containers because they are cheap, easy for minors to access, and commonly abused by drivers, fueling road crashes and other public health problems.
Manufacturers are now required to package alcoholic drinks in containers of 200ml or more, he said.
One of the two factories was uncovered after a distributor tipped off NAFDAC investigators, leading officers straight to the site.
Ojo warned that NAFDAC will continue enforcement nationwide, and any manufacturer or distributor caught violating the ban will face sanctions.
He called on manufacturers, distributors and retailers to comply with the directive, which he said is meant to protect public health, especially among young people, and cut down alcohol-related road accidents.
