The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced Friday, May 1, 2026, as a public holiday in observance of International Workers’ Day.
Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo made the declaration on behalf of the government, extending congratulations to workers nationwide ahead of the annual celebration. The announcement was communicated through a statement issued by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
The Minister praised Nigerian workers for their commitment and contribution to national development, describing their efforts as vital to the country’s progress and economic future.
He urged workers to uphold values of patriotism, productivity, and dedication, emphasizing that these qualities remain central to achieving sustainable national growth.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to worker welfare and security, and to fostering conditions that support a thriving economy. The Minister also called on all Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding during the holiday, and to use the occasion as a moment of reflection on the role of unity and hard work in nation-building.
