President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Nigeria’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs, filling the void left by Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, who stepped down from the role to pursue his political ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections.
The announcement was confirmed through a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s elevation comes as no surprise to political observers, given her prior service as Minister of State in the same ministry a role that positioned her as a natural successor to the top diplomatic post.
Alongside her appointment, President Tinubu has tapped Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye to step into the Minister of State position she vacated, pending Senate confirmation. Enikanolaiye, who hails from Kogi State, was previously serving as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations.
A career diplomat with more than three decades in Nigeria’s foreign service, Enikanolaiye brings considerable weight to the role. He has held the position of Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has represented Nigeria at diplomatic missions in Addis Ababa, Belgrade, Ottawa, London, and New Delhi.
The Presidency described the reshuffle as part of a broader push to strengthen Nigeria’s foreign policy machinery, with emphasis on strategic engagement, economic diplomacy, and deeper global partnerships. President Tinubu called on both appointees to champion Nigeria’s national interests, promote regional stability, and prioritize the welfare of Nigerians both at home and on the international stage.
