Retired workers of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) have issued a warning that they may shut down seaports across the country over the non-payment of pension increments and other entitlements spanning more than 16 years.
The Nigerian Ports Authority Pensioners Welfare Association said it would embark on a nationwide protest within seven days if the issue is not urgently addressed.
The association’s president, Charles Ayo Binitie, accused the NPA management of failing to implement the constitutionally approved five-year pension review, which he said has been neglected since 2008.
According to him, many retirees are currently receiving extremely low monthly pensions despite the rising cost of living.
“It is sad and regrettable that amid the present high inflation rate and economic downturn in Nigeria, only a few NPA retirees receive up to N100,000, while more than 50 percent earn between N50,000 and as low as N30,000 monthly,” he said.
Binitie argued that the current pension structure violates Section 173(3) of the Nigerian Constitution, which provides for regular pension increases.
He further stated that several attempts to resolve the matter through dialogue had failed, adding that petitions were sent to the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission as well as the Presidency through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, without response.
According to him, the NPA has also failed for over 15 years to submit required documentation for pension review to the relevant authorities.
The association also dismissed reports of leadership disputes within its ranks, saying court rulings—including a Lagos High Court judgement and a September 2025 decision by an Apapa Magistrate Court—had confirmed its current leadership.
The retirees called on the Federal Government and relevant agencies to intervene urgently and ensure the payment of all outstanding pension arrears, including adjustments linked to the 2024 minimum wage review.
