Toba Ajiboye, Organising Secretary of the NURTW Lagos State Council, has died after gunmen ambushed his vehicle on Ikorodu Road.
The union official, popularly known as Ijaya, was attacked on Sunday night while returning home from a visit to his childhood neighbourhood in Fadeyi.
Gunmen intercepted his car along Ikorodu Road and opened fire, leaving the white vehicle riddled with bullet holes. Videos and photos that circulated online showed bullet marks across the windscreen and body of the car.
Early reports had indicated that Ajiboye and other occupants of the vehicle survived the shooting with gunshot wounds, but he later died from his injuries. The identities of the attackers remain unknown.
Reacting to the killing, Lagos NURTW Chairman Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, popularly called Sego, described Ajiboye as a loyal and dependable ally whose loss has left him devastated.
In a tribute posted on Facebook on Tuesday, Sego said Ajiboye was more than a professional associate but a trusted friend and a pillar of both the union and their political structure. He extended condolences to the family and prayed for the repose of his soul.
In related news, MC Oluomo Akinsanya was recently re-elected unopposed as NURTW Lagos State chairman, alongside 30 other executive members.
