Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has commended Afrobeats star Davido for using the ongoing World Cup to draw global attention to Nigeria’s security challenges.
Davido had appeared at the tournament in a custom black leather jacket emblazoned with “BRING THEM HOME,” paired with green buttons bearing the names of schoolchildren reportedly abducted in Oyo State.
In a Facebook post on Monday, Obi described the singer’s action as a “remarkable gesture,” saying it went beyond entertainment by helping place Nigeria’s insecurity and the plight of the abducted children before an international audience.
The former Anambra State governor also used the moment to reflect on Nigeria’s absence from the World Cup, arguing that the country’s failure to qualify stems not from a lack of talent but from weak structures and leadership failures in developing sporting and youth potential.
He noted that the visibility of Nigerian entertainers at the tournament, alongside Nigerian-born players representing other nations, highlights the scale of the country’s untapped human resources.
Obi called on political leaders to make deliberate efforts to build an enabling environment where young Nigerians can thrive in sports and other fields.
