Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has dismissed reports claiming that the Mexican government rejected his diplomatic appointment, attributing the delay in his resumption to the ongoing FIFA World Cup being jointly hosted by Mexico and the United States.
Speaking on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the former presidential aide described the reports as unfounded and politically motivated.
According to Omokri, Mexico’s current attention is focused on the global football tournament, and there has been no indication that the country has declined to accept him as Nigeria’s envoy.
“Mexico has not rejected me. Not at all. You should understand that Mexico is right now hosting the World Cup, along with the United States of America, and all of their focus is on that,” he said.
He further explained that the delay is not peculiar to him, noting that several Nigerian ambassadors-designate are yet to assume duties in their respective countries.
“Most of us ambassadors have not resumed. So, I’m not the only one. A lot of my colleagues are in my situation, but it’s okay. These things happen,” Omokri stated.
The ambassador-designate also accused opposition figures of spreading the rejection narrative, insisting that diplomatic engagements are guided by official realities rather than political speculation.
“The opposition will always say things like I have been rejected. We do not work on the basis of the opposition. We work on the basis of reality,” he said.
Omokri maintained that many countries continue to value diplomatic relations with Nigeria and are willing to receive its representatives.
“The reality of it is that we have countries in the world that respect Nigeria, and they’re going to be taking Nigeria’s envoys,” he added.
