Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed concern over what he described as the growing erosion of public confidence in Nigeria’s institutions, warning that the trend is undermining trust in governance, the judiciary and the economy.
In a statement shared on his X account, Obi recalled his earlier reservations during the controversy surrounding the removal of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen. According to him, he feared at the time that the incident could create doubts about the independence and credibility of Nigeria’s institutions in the eyes of the international community.
Reacting to the recent Federal High Court judgment ordering the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and several other political parties, Obi argued that such decisions further weaken public trust in the nation’s legal system and should be reversed.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate stressed that strong institutions, rather than powerful individuals, are essential for national development. He cautioned against actions that could be perceived as weakening democratic structures for political purposes.
“The Federal High Court judgment ordering the de-registration of the ADC and other political parties is one of those actions that further reduces the common man’s trust in our legal system. It should be reversed,” Obi stated.
He pledged support for efforts aimed at restoring the independence and integrity of the judiciary, insisting that ordinary citizens must have confidence that justice is fair and accessible.
Obi also called for protection of the business community from legal uncertainty and intimidation, emphasizing that a credible justice system is vital for economic growth and stability.
Addressing members of the legal profession, he urged judges, senior advocates and lawyers to defend the rule of law and uphold democratic principles, describing the current situation as a critical moment for the country’s justice system.
