Dr. Gbenga Hashim, a founding member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its first Deputy National Publicity Secretary, has officially resigned from the party, citing unending internal crises and unsuccessful reconciliation attempts.
In a letter dated April 4, 2026, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Usuma Ward, Bwari Area Council, Abuja, Hashim said the party “has been embroiled in persistent crises for over a year, resulting in a split into two dominant factions.” He stressed that his numerous efforts to restore unity alongside other party leaders “did not yield the desired results.”
Hashim accused certain actors within the party of deliberately weakening the PDP, potentially compromising its ability to present credible candidates for the 2027 elections. “I cannot, in good conscience, remain part of a system that undermines democratic values,” he stated.
Highlighting Nigeria’s current challenges, Hashim pointed to “widespread insecurity, daily massacres, and rising poverty, with over 18,000 lives lost to terrorism in the past three years.” He added that the country’s economy has “crumbled, leaving millions in distress.”
Describing the party’s current state as “disheartening,” Hashim said internal divisions and self-interest have eroded the PDP’s founding principles. He said it was time to step aside and “collaborate with other patriotic leaders to prevent the emergence of a one-party state and build a political system that ensures security, justice, and prosperity for all Nigerians.”
He concluded by expressing gratitude to party officials, ward executives, and stakeholders for their support during his tenure.
