Justice Binta Fatima Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Hamatu Modu, a major food supplier to Boko Haram in Borno State, to 10 years in prison. Modu had been charged with providing food and information to the terrorist group.
Prosecuted by the Federal Government through the office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Modu faced a four-count charge to which he pleaded guilty in open court. While the court initially handed him 40 years—10 years for each count—the sentences were ordered to run concurrently, reducing the total term to 10 years.
The prosecution was led by Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation.
In a related ruling, another supplier, Isah Ali, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for similar offences tied to Boko Haram activities. Ali’s sentence will start from the date of his arrest three years ago.
Justice Nyako also mandated that both convicts participate in rehabilitation and deradicalisation programmes after completing their prison terms. The Federal Ministry of Interior has been tasked with assigning appropriate correctional facilities for their sentences.
