Popular Nollywood actor, Alex Ekubo, has reportedly died at the age of 40.
According to reports, the talented movie star passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026, at a hospital in Lagos State after suffering complications linked to an undisclosed illness.
Sources close to the actor disclosed that Alex had allegedly been battling kidney cancer for some time and was placed on life support before his death.
The heartbreaking development has thrown family members, friends, colleagues, and fans into mourning, with many expressing shock over the tragic loss. Television station TVC also confirmed the actor’s passing.
Alex Ekubo was widely celebrated for his outstanding performances in Nollywood romantic comedies and drama films, earning a reputation as one of the industry’s most versatile and sought-after actors.
He gained national attention after emerging first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition and later rose to fame following his role in the Nollywood hit movie Weekend Getaway.
In 2020, he was recognised among the “Most Influential People of African Descent Under 40” by the United Nations for his impact on entertainment and youth development across Africa.
The news of his death comes weeks after fellow Nollywood actor, Ikechukwu Ogbonna, popularly known as IK Ogbonna, addressed public concerns over Alex Ekubo’s prolonged absence from social media and public appearances.
In a video shared online at the time, IK Ogbonna revealed that Alex attended his sister’s wedding and appeared healthy. He explained that the actor had simply decided to take a break from the spotlight and social media to focus on his personal life and mental well-being.
