Senator Saliu Mustapha, representing Kwara Central in the National Assembly, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), attributing his exit to recent developments within the party’s Kwara State chapter.
The senator announced his resignation late Thursday, August 20, 2026, via his Instagram page, alongside a resignation letter dated August 14, 2026. The letter was addressed to the chairman of the APC at Gambari Ward 1, Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Weeks of consultations before decision
Mustapha explained that his resignation followed weeks of consultations with supporters, stakeholders, and constituents across Kwara Central, as well as other concerned residents of the state. He stressed that the decision was not made impulsively.
“My political decisions have always been guided by my belief that politics should be centred on people, principles and purpose,” Mustapha stated, noting that he had engaged relevant stakeholders extensively before arriving at his final position.
Senator thanks Tinubu, APC leadership
Despite quitting the party, Mustapha expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the national leadership of the APC for the relationships and opportunities he enjoyed during his time in the party.
Latest sign of APC crisis in Kwara
Mustapha’s resignation is the latest indication of deepening tension within the APC’s Kwara State chapter, as politicians across the state begin jostling for position ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The senator had previously been identified as a key figure in the G15/TOP group, a faction of aggrieved APC stakeholders in Kwara State who have persistently criticised the party’s current direction in the state.
Mustapha was originally elected to the Senate on the APC platform, making his resignation a significant development in Kwara’s political landscape as the state edges closer to the next electoral cycle.
