The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill says the Executive Bill on state police will be presented to President Bola Tinubu on September 3, 2026.
Chairman of the group and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents in Abuja on Monday, shortly after the committee’s inaugural meeting.
Tinubu had in July inaugurated the presidential committee tasked with drafting the legal framework for implementing state police across the country.
Gbajabiamila explained that a consultation on the completed draft would take place before the bill reaches the President’s desk.
He said the working group is inviting memoranda, position papers, and practical proposals from stakeholders across the country as part of the process.
According to him, the national consultation will give Nigerians the opportunity to engage directly with the clauses, safeguards, funding proposals, and transition arrangements contained in the draft.
“The approved work programme is a seven-week, milestone-driven exercise running from July 27 to September 14, 2026,” he said.
“The resulting Executive Bill package is scheduled for presentation to the President on September 3.
“Subject to his approval, a national consultation on the completed draft will follow, after which the text and supporting materials will be revised and prepared for formal transmission to the National Assembly.
“The timetable is demanding, but it is not a shortcut.”
