Three police officers have lost their lives following the explosion of an improvised explosive device (IED) during a clearance operation along the Anka–Bagega Road in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The incident reportedly happened at about 5:05 p.m. on June 15, during an operation aimed at clearing suspected explosive devices believed to have been planted by armed bandits.
Security sources said the team was led by the Officer in Charge of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, SP Abdulrazak Musa Hassan, and included personnel from the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU).
The operatives were conducting a controlled clearance mission using an armoured personnel carrier when the vehicle reportedly triggered the explosive device.
The blast killed three officers instantly, including SP Abdulrazak Musa Hassan, Inspector Murtala Musa of the VCRU, and Inspector Auwal Ahmad of the EOD unit.
Their bodies were later evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre in Gusau, where they were deposited at the morgue for post-mortem examination.
Authorities are said to have launched an investigation into the incident as security operations continue in the area.
