President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reacted with shock to the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, who died while being held captive by terrorists in Katsina State.
The Katsina State Government confirmed on Saturday that the retired military officer died in the custody of bandits who had abducted him. The state government described his death as tragic, calling it a major loss to his family, Katsina State, and the nation at large.
According to the government’s statement, the retired officer died from complications linked to diabetes and hypertension while still in the hands of his captors.
Reacting through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu noted that General Abubakar had enjoyed a distinguished military career before retiring a few years ago. He was reportedly travelling to his hometown when he was seized by the assailants.
The President sympathised with the late general’s family, particularly his wife, who remains in captivity. He also conveyed condolences to the Katsina State government and the Nigerian armed forces.
Part of the statement read: “While the terrorists have done their worst, the President wants them to know that the government will never bow to their demand to release their members held by our security agencies.”
Tinubu reiterated remarks he made on June 12, warning that bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terrorism must surrender or face the full might of the Nigerian state, stressing that the offer of surrender would not remain available indefinitely and that no mercy would be shown to those responsible for shedding Nigerian blood.
He called on Nigerians to remain united, expressing confidence that those working against the nation would soon be defeated, and pledged that the country would overcome terrorism while continuing on the path of development.
The statement further described General Abubakar’s death as a turning point in the fight against terrorism and insurgency, affirming that the government would never negotiate with such groups under any circumstances, and would continue to regard them as the nation’s foremost enemies, deserving no leniency.
