Troops under Sector 2 of Operation Hadin Kai have successfully thwarted an attack on Kukareta community in Borno State, neutralising 24 terrorists during a prolonged night battle.
Security sources revealed that the assault began around midnight on Thursday and lasted until about 3:00 a.m., with soldiers engaging the attackers in a fierce exchange of fire.
The troops were able to overpower the insurgents, inflicting heavy losses and forcing the survivors to flee the area.
After the encounter, a large cache of weapons was recovered from the fleeing terrorists. The recovered items include 18 AK-47 rifles, three General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), two PKT anti-aircraft guns, three RPG tubes, two mortar tubes, four hand grenades, and 18 AK-47 magazines. Troops also recovered a substantial quantity of 7.62mm belted ammunition used for anti-aircraft operations.
According to the sources, two soldiers sustained gunshot injuries during the operation and are currently receiving medical attention.
The successful defence of Kukareta has been described as a significant operational achievement, underscoring the continued efforts of troops in ongoing counter-insurgency operations in Nigeria’s North-East.
The development comes amid intensified military campaigns aimed at dismantling terrorist networks and restoring peace to affected communities in the region.
