The University of Ibadan (UI) has warned that certificates left uncollected for more than 10 years will be shredded, as part of new guidelines governing the release of graduates’ academic documents.
The rules, contained in a special bulletin dated September 15, 2026, and signed by the Registrar, Mr Ganiyu Saliu, were sighted by a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent in Ibadan on Wednesday.
Under the new guidelines, graduates must collect their Statements of Result within six months of being notified that the documents are ready. Anyone who misses this window will be charged a non-collection penalty of N2,500, payable before the document is released.
Statements of Result remain valid for two years from the date of issue and serve as interim proof of graduation pending collection of the actual certificate, which UI describes as the only official and permanent evidence of a graduate’s qualification.
Graduates are required to collect their certificates within that two-year window. The university said certificates become available from the date of convocation and remain so for one year afterward, during which collection attracts a statutory fee of N7,500.
Beyond that first year, escalating penalties apply:
- N25,000 for certificates collected between one and five years after convocation
- N50,000 for certificates collected between five and 10 years after convocation
- Certificates not collected after 10 years risk being shredded
UI clarified that these non-collection penalties are separate from the standard N7,500 issuance and collection fee, and urged graduates and other stakeholders to note the guidelines and comply accordingly.
