The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has raised alarm over the worsening security situation in Nigeria, describing it as having escalated to a “state of war.” The group called on the Federal Government to take urgent and extraordinary steps to contain the growing violence across the country.
The warning follows a recent Boko Haram attack in Mussa community, Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, where six soldiers and a woman were reportedly killed. It also comes amid renewed international concern, including calls from foreign stakeholders urging a review of Nigeria’s defence leadership following attacks during the 2026 Easter period.
In a communiqué released after its 38th board meeting held in Abuja and chaired by Bashir Dalhatu, the ACF stressed that the scale and persistence of insecurity now require a shift in national priorities. The meeting was attended by several prominent northern figures, including Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, Mohammed D. Abubakar, Tukur Yusufu Buratai, and Tijjani Muhammad-Bande.
The forum noted that violence across different parts of the country has become widespread, affecting states such as Borno, Plateau, Niger, and Kwara, with both civilians and security personnel among the victims. It added that the humanitarian consequences include mass displacement, trauma, and destruction of livelihoods, while economic activities continue to suffer.
According to the ACF, insecurity is also disrupting farming activities and contributing to rising inflation, further worsening economic hardship. It warned that the situation now threatens national stability and survival if not urgently addressed.
The group urged government to adopt what it described as a “wartime approach,” including the redirection of resources from less critical projects toward strengthening security operations.
ACF further stated that Nigeria is at a critical turning point, emphasizing that meaningful development will remain difficult unless citizens can live in safety and without fear.
