Youth members of the African Democratic Congress (African Democratic Congress) have declared plans to stage coordinated protests at offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos, Ogun, and Jigawa States under the campaign hashtag #AmupitanMustGo.
The party’s National Youth Leader, Balarabe Rufai, made the announcement via a post on 𝕏 on Monday, where he also circulated flyers titled “Operation Occupy INEC.”
According to the schedule shared, the Lagos protest was set to begin at 8 a.m. at the Yaba College of Technology, while the Ogun State action was planned for 11 a.m. at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited) office in Abeokuta. The Jigawa location was also listed as part of the coordinated demonstrations.
As of the time of reporting, it was not immediately clear if the Lagos protest had commenced at the INEC office.
Rufai said the demonstrations were intended to demand accountability and adherence to due process, insisting the actions were peaceful and lawful.
He stated that the Lagos youth wing was “occupying INEC” to press for the resignation of INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan and the reinstatement of leadership aligned with the David Mark-led faction of the party.
“This is a call for accountability, not chaos,” he said, adding that citizens have a responsibility to respond when institutions are perceived to fall short of fairness.
The protests come in the wake of an earlier demonstration in Abuja on April 8 involving prominent political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ADC National Chairman David Mark, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.
Others present included Peter Obi, Rauf Aregbesola, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Dino Melaye.
The demonstrations are linked to INEC’s recent decision on April 1 to derecognise factions within the ADC following a Court of Appeal ruling that directed parties to maintain the status quo in an ongoing leadership dispute. ADC supporters have since accused the electoral commission of bias and are calling for reforms within the electoral body’s leadership.
