The Federal Government will end subsidy payments in the power sector from 2027, Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe said on Friday.
Tegbe made the announcement during a media interactive session where he addressed the sector’s mounting debt profile. He said the subsidy phase-out would not come at the expense of Nigerians, though he did not detail what alternative support, if any, would replace it.
The minister also ruled out any near-term increase in electricity tariffs, seeking to reassure consumers already grappling with the fallout of fuel subsidy removal and naira devaluation.
Tegbe did not disclose the size of the power sector’s current debt burden or how the subsidy withdrawal would be phased in ahead of the 2027 deadline.
