President Bola Tinubu has approved a new salary increase for members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, a move the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, described as a historic step toward boosting troop morale and welfare.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Matawalle said the salary review had been a top priority of the administration since its inception, noting that he personally championed the initiative within government.
He commended the President’s leadership, saying the decision reflected Tinubu’s commitment to building a motivated and professional military capable of tackling Nigeria’s security challenges.
About 250,000 military personnel are expected to benefit from the new pay package, which takes effect from September 1, 2026.
The salary adjustments will be implemented across ranks as follows:
- 80% increase for junior personnel, from Private to Staff Sergeant
- 50% increase for mid-level personnel, from Warrant Officer to Colonel
- 30% increase for senior officers above Colonel, including Brigadier-General, Major-General, Lieutenant-General, and General
According to Matawalle, the pay rise forms part of broader federal government efforts to cushion troops from economic hardship as they battle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats nationwide.
Quoting Tinubu, the minister said the personnel who keep the country safe must be supported and appreciated for their service.
Matawalle added that beyond the salary increase, the government will continue modernising the military through the supply of advanced weapons, equipment, and technology to strengthen operational capacity.
He urged troops to reciprocate with renewed dedication, describing the pay rise as a call to intensify efforts in protecting the nation.
