The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast cloudy weather, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across many parts of the country from Wednesday to Friday.
In a weather outlook released in Abuja on Wednesday, the agency said states in the northern, North-Central and southern regions would experience varying degrees of rainfall and thunderstorms over the three-day period, with strong winds likely to accompany some storms.
NiMet advised residents to take necessary safety precautions as the weather system moves across the country.
Northern region
The agency said Wednesday would open with cloud patches across the north, bringing thunderstorms and moderate rainfall to parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa states. The storms are expected to spread to Kaduna and the entire North-East later in the day.
Cloudy conditions will persist into Thursday, with morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall forecast for Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe. NiMet said thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rain would extend to most of the region by afternoon and evening.
On Friday, early morning thunderstorms and rainfall are expected in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Taraba, before the system spreads across the wider northern region later in the day.
North-Central region
NiMet forecast cloudy skies over the North-Central on Wednesday, with a chance of thunderstorms and light rainfall in the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau and Nasarawa states during the morning. Benue, Kogi, the FCT, Kwara, Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau should expect moderate rainfall and thunderstorms later in the day.
The region will see widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall throughout Thursday, the agency said. Light morning rainfall is forecast for Nasarawa and Benue on Friday, with moderate rainfall and thunderstorms expected across the region later.
Southern region
NiMet predicted generally cloudy skies over the south on Wednesday morning, with light rainfall in parts of the South-South. Moderate rainfall is expected to later affect Ondo, Ekiti, Oyo, the South-East and the South-South.
On Thursday, moderate rainfall is forecast for Ondo and the South-South during the day, with heavier rainfall expected in the South-East and South-South later. Friday will bring light morning rainfall across the South-South, followed by moderate rainfall in Ondo, Oyo, Enugu, Imo and other parts of the South-East and South-South.
Safety precautions
NiMet warned that strong winds may precede rainfall in areas prone to thunderstorms and urged the public to secure loose objects to prevent damage or injury.
The agency advised residents to avoid driving during heavy rainfall, disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and stay clear of tall trees to avoid injury from falling branches or uprooted trees.
It also called on airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to support flight planning and safe operations, and urged the public to stay updated through NiMet’s weather bulletins.
