The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commenced the reconstruction and upgrade of the 138-kilometre Alaoji–Onitsha 330kV transmission line, a move aimed at strengthening electricity supply across the South-East.
The project, implemented in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), includes clearing the Right of Way (RoW) and compensating affected communities under a Resettlement Action Plan (RAP), the company said in a statement on Monday.
Once completed, the existing single-circuit line will be replaced with a 330kV double-circuit quad-conductor line, expected to significantly boost the grid’s capacity and efficiency. Aromeh Adole, Assistant General Manager at the AfDB Project Implementation Unit, said the upgrade will quadruple transmission capacity, transforming bulk power delivery in the region.
Compensation for Project Affected Persons (PAPs) along the corridor in Abia and Imo states was disbursed between March 31 and April 2, covering eight Local Government Areas. Beneficiaries have 90 days to vacate the RoW following payment.
Engr. Edeh Obiora Alexander, Acting Project Manager for the Nigeria Transmission Expansion Project (NTEP-1), credited TCN Managing Director Engr. Sule Abdulaziz and President Bola Tinubu for ensuring timely project funding and strong leadership. The upgrade is expected to be completed within 18 months.
TCN said the project will improve power supply to the Alaoji–Port Harcourt corridor, Abia State, and the wider South-East, reduce transmission losses, and enhance overall grid reliability.
The upgrade aligns with broader national efforts to expand the grid and deliver more stable electricity to residential and industrial areas. Recently, the Federal Government approved a ₦3.3 trillion plan to settle longstanding debts in the power sector, addressing legacy obligations from February 2015 to March 2025.
Nigeria’s power infrastructure has faced challenges, including two major grid collapses in January 2026, which caused nationwide blackouts. The TCN project is seen as a key step toward more reliable electricity supply.
