The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day to mark the commencement of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who said the decision reflects the government’s recognition of the significance of Hijrah to the Muslim faithful.
According to Oyelade, Hijrah commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD, an event regarded as a major milestone in Islamic history.
He noted that the state government approved the work-free day as a mark of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community across Oyo State.
The commissioner urged residents to use the occasion to offer prayers for peace, unity, and continued progress in both Oyo State and Nigeria.
He also encouraged citizens to reflect on the lessons of Hijrah, particularly the values of brotherhood, unity, and communal harmony.
Oyelade described the Islamic New Year as a period of spiritual reflection and renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence, calling on residents to come together in prayers for the prosperity of the state and the nation.
